Biographical / Historical
New Castle is located near the Pennsylvania–Ohio border about 50 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and 18 miles southeast of Youngstown, Ohio. The city reached its economic peak in the 1920s with a variety of manufacturing industries, but the Depression brought economic decline, followed by a population decline from the 1950s through the rest of the century.
The Ukrainian Orthodox parish of the Holy Trinity was formed in 1926, but it is unclear what bishop or jurisdiction they were under. By the 1930s they were in the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America under bishop Bohdan (Shpyl'ka), and they joined the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA after the "Unification Sobor" of 1950. The parish closed in the early 2000s.
