Biographical / Historical
Jeannette, located approximately 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was a major industrial center in the first half of the 20th century, having numerous glass plants, as well as the Elliott Company (maker of dynamos and turbines) and the Pennsylvania Rubber Works. As such, it attracted numerous immigrants prior to WWII, including many from Eastern Europe. Like many Ukrainian Orthodox parishes, St. Michael's Parish was founded during the Great Depression, only to close due to declining membership later in the 20th century.
