Biographical / Historical
Export, Pennsylvania was a coal mining area during the first half of the 20th century. The mines employed many immigrants, especially from Eastern Europe, and the St. Nicholas parish served that community. It began as a parish of the Russian Orthodox Mission to North America, and served many ethnic groups, including Serbs and Rusyns. It later became a part of the jusrisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. Like other parishes founded in the early 20th century industrial and mining towns, it suffered from declining membership and closed in the 1970s.
