Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a single photograph album containing 11 photographs related to the Ukrainian school established in Przemyśl (Peremyshl') by the Ukrainian Central Committee in Poland. The photographs are of Committee members, members of the community, students, and of the school buildings and their construction. All of the photographs are captioned, and some have inscriptions on the reverse.

Цей фонд складається з одного фотоальбому, що містить 11 фотографій, пов'язані з українським бурсом у Перемишлі, який був заснований Українським Центральним Комітетом у Польщі. Фотографії членів Комітету, місцевої спільноти, студентів і шкільних будівель і їх будівництво. Всі фотографії мають заголовки, а деякі також мають написи на реверсі.

Biographical / Historical

The Ukrainian Central Committee in Poland (Український Центральний Комітет у Польщі) was an organization of Ukrainian political refugees from central Ukraine who were living in the Second Polish Republic after World War I and the Ukrainian War of Independence. It was founded in 1921 in Warsaw. It provided humanitarian assistance for Ukrainian refugees, and coordinated closely with the Ukrainian People's Republic in Exile. By 1929 it had 68 local branches with a membership of 15,000, and it remained active until the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. It founded a Ukrainian Gymansium (secondary school) and a home for the disabled in Kalisz, and a boarding school for children of Ukrainian refugees in Przemysl.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Obtained from Kateryna Hutsul (a student of the school) via Liudmyla Besoniv (St. Sophia Library). It is not known if she actually created the album, or of she received it from a third party.
