Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal correspondence and writings of Vikentii Shandor, as well as records documenting his activities in various Ukrainian and Ukrainian American organizations, most prominently the Carpathian Alliance and the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in Exile. The latter contains correspondence, meeting and event records, and related materials.

Фонд складається з особистої кореспонденції та творів Вікентія Шандора, а також з матеріалів, які документують його діяльність в різних українських та українських організаціях. Особливо між ними це Карпатський Союз та Уряд Української Народної Республіки в екзилі. Між матеріалами кореспонденція, протоколи, інформації про заходи, фінансові звіти, та подібне.

Biographical / Historical

Vikentii Shandor (also Vincent Shandor, Вікентій Шандор) was a lawyer, author, and Ukrainian American community activist originally from Transcarpathian Ukraine.

He was born in the village of Baranyntsi (today Uzhhorod raion, Zakarpats'ka oblast', Ukraine) in 1907. He completed the Commerce Academy in Uzhhorod and Mukachevo, and studied law at the Charles University in Prague, where he obtained a Doctor of Law degree in 1939. He later studied economics and political science in Frankfurt, Germany and at Columbia University in New York City.

He worked for banks in Uzhhorod and Bratislava, and in 1938-1939 served as a representative of Carpathian Ukraine to the Czechoslovak government in Prague. He emigrated to the United States in 1948, where he worked for the U.S. Treasury Department and as a political science and economics advisor on the Slavic lands of the U.S.S.R. to the United Nations Secretariat. He was active in Ukrainian organizations such as the Carpathian Alliance and the Ukrainian Technical Institute, and from 1985 to 1989 served as deputy chair of the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in Exile.
