Biographical / Historical

Andrew Krochmalny (Андрій Крохмальний; Andrii Krokhmal'nyi) was a first wave Ukrainian immigrant to the United States. He was born on September 1894 in the village of Velykyi Poliukhiv, Austria-Hungary (now L'viv oblast', Ukraine). He emigrated to the United States in 1913, enlisted in the Unites States Army in 1920. His wife Michalina Kutnyi (Kutnyj; Михаліна Кутна; Mykhalina Kutna) was born on September 22, 1911, also in Velykyi Poliukhiv. It appears that they were already married prior to Andrew leaving for the United States, but because of the war she was not able to join him until 1929.

Abstract

Andrew and Michalina Krochmalny were pre-WWII immigrants from Ukraine to the United States. The collection consists primarily of a large album of postcard and advertising cards assembled by Andrew Krochmalny, along with personal documents and photographs.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donation of Joanne Keiderling, daughter of Andrew and Michalina Krochmalny.

Processing Information

The postcards were mounted by the creator in an album using photo corners. The album in its original state was photographed, then disassembled by the processing archivist for preservation reasons. Some postcards are still affixed to the album pages because photo corners had been pasted on top of them. These are gradually being removed.
